Top April 2012 Events in NYC
Apr 09, 2012

Flowers and films, cars and hats: April 2012 has just started and this is your chance to catch some of the biggest events of the month in New York City. Whether you love nature or cars, parades or theaters, the Big Apple has something interesting to offer. Pick your favorite!

Hanami: Cherry Blossom (Brooklyn Botanical Garden, April 1-29)

Get ready for a pink-flowered shower. The incredible natural show offered by hundreds of blooming cherry trees is a must-see for your spring days in New York. It celebrates an ancient Japanese tradition of Hanami: all you have to do is enjoy colors and perfumes (closed on Mondays).

Macy’s Flower Show (Macy’s, ongoing - through April 7)

Make sure you visit Macy’s at least once before getting to their famous Flower Show. This gigantic department store is so decorated and beautiful on ordinary days that you risk to take all those plants for granted. This time it will also move outside, with a Brasil-style rainforest filled with exotic birds and tropical plants. Don’t miss their legendary windows and a special Gucci garden for a branded-flower experience. And if you’re wondering about any waterfall, they got it as well.

New York International Auto Show (Jacob Javits Convention Center, April 6-15)

If you feel like walking through hundreds of shining new luxury cars and discover the future of the whole automotive industry, this is the place. Started in 1900, the NYIAS is one of the greatest public shows in its field, hosting conferences, industry forums, award ceremonies and many preview events. Make sure you book your tickets in advance.

Easter Parade (Fifth Avenue, from 49th to 57th Street, April 8)

Even if it lacks the spectacular organization that marks almost every parade in New York, the Easter Parade is a great chance to enjoy some hat-madness in the City. From 10:00am to 4:00pm you’ll see thousands of people gather together with anything on their heads: clocks, birds, eggs, nests, sport signs, rabbits, New York symbols and many more. Get out early for a first-row experience and have your camera ready: they’re just happy to pose for you!

TriBeCa Film Festival (April 18-29)

Short films, special screenings, celebrities and independent productions are about to invade the area of TriBeCa, in Lower Manhattan. Directed by Robert De Niro, this eleventh annual film festival will host talks with the main names of cinema industry as well as celebration of popular gems (such as the unforgettable «Jaws» directed by Steven Spielberg) or studios (such as the «100 Years of Universal», a conversation featuring Meryl Streep and Robert De Niro).

Earth Day NY (Grand Central Terminal and Times Square, April 19-21)

Started as a local celebration, the Earth Day New York became an event in its own right in 1989. Year by year, it has been adding a greener touch to the City through many environment-related events. It’s not only a wake-up call, as the staff loves to make clear: with education programs, exhibits and thousands of people involved, it’s a real chance to do something for the planet.
